Northern clubs in FA Cup ecstasy

The weekend saw FA Cup glory for both Merseyside clubs as Liverpool cruised past Brighton &Hove Albion whilst Everton continued their recent good form with a victory over Blackpool at Goodison. Stoke City also confirmed their place in the quarter finals after dispatching Crawley Town and now look forward to a visit to Anfield. Bolton Wanderers and Leicester City also confirmed their places in the next round with victories over Millwall and Norwich respectively. This weeks FA Cup action did not see good fortune take hold for the major London clubs with Arsenal being knocked out by an ecstatic Sunderland team whilst both Chelsea and Tottenham could only do enough to win replays with Chelsea visiting St Andrews on 6th March and Tottenham welcoming Stevenage to White Hart Lane the following evening.

In other football news Alan Curbishley has seemingly pulled out of the race to become the next Wolves boss leaving the way for Steve Bruce who becomes the new best bet to succeed Mick McCarthy at the helm. Nonetheless Redknapp no doubt has his mind firmly focused on other issues notably Spurs’ progression in the FA Cup as well as their fantastic league form. Will Redknapp want the ‘’poisoned chalice’ that is the England Job or will he stay at Tottenham where he has seen himself become a cult figure? Arsenal broken after double cup upset

Arsenal have been left reeling this week after being knocked out of the FA cup by Martin O’Neill’s Sunderland at the Stadium of light. This follows a self destructive display last week, where they were beaten 4-0 by AC Milan, that sees there Champions League progress for the season hanging on a shoe string.

Despite the apparent decline in the quality of the game within Italy’s domestic league setup, the Rossoneri, who currently sit at the summit of Serie A, were in fine form last Wednesday and were able to demolish Arsenal with relative ease. With two goals from Brazilian Robinho and a master class performance from Ibrahimovic the Gunners proved unable to cut the grade in the last 16 of the tournament and must now score four goals at The Emirates to have any chance of progressing to the quarter finals. All this must be done without the presence of legend Thierry Henry who played his last performance of his loan spell back at the club against Milan. Henry who scored 3 goals in 6 appearances before the Milan visit was unable to make an impression as a second half substitute in the game which could have seen a fairytale ending for the French striker. So it was a bad day for Arsenal but a great day for anyone putting the right bet on this encounter.

Despite the result in Milan and Arsenal off the pace in the Premier League the Gunners were, up until the weekend, still in contention for FA Cup glory this season. This was ended on Saturday after a good day at the bookies for many betting on the football saw Sunderland beat Wenger’s men by two goals to nil thus compounding the misery for the North West London team, who are set for their 7th consecutive trophyless season. Wenger who demanded an immediate response from his team after the Milan drubbing will deny Arsenal are in crisis despite the defeat that sees them out of all cup competitions and now left fighting for qualification for next years Champions League. The next test comes fast and furious for a club in relative freefall with ties against Tottenham and Liverpool in the league, followed by Milan’s visit to the Emirates that really could make or brake their season.

Gunners prepare for clash in Milan

The Champions League continues this week with Wenger and his men making a trip across the continent to face the might of AC Milan in the last 16. Arsenal comes into the game in promising form with Thierry Henry set to make his final appearance before returning to the States. The on loan front man has had a successful return to the club scoring 3 goals in 6 appearances and will be eager to leave on a high note.

Despite the apparent decline in the quality of the game in Italy, Milan, who currently sit at the top of Serie A, will provide a massive test for the Gunners. The atmosphere at the San Siro will be electric whilst the Italian giants will be determined not to repeat the same mistakes that saw them dumped out of last year’s competition at the hands of Arsenals London rivals Tottenham. This will no doubt see them play tight at the back in an attempt to limit Arsenals fast flowing attacking football whilst Milan will be very much relying on their Swedish international powerhouse, Zlatan Ibrahimovic at the top end of the pitch.

Incidentally, the Rossoneri have been knocked out of the Champions League in the last 16 by English clubs in 3 of the past 4 seasons. What are the odds of it happening again? Can the experience of Milan’s ageing legs take them further in the competition or will the youth of Walcott and Chamberlain be too hot to handle? Get your free £200 bet with Bet365 or 100% first deposit bonus now.

Valentine’s Day saw the opening games of the last 16 with Barcelona, on the back of a shock domestic defeat to Osasuna, putting Bayer Leverkusen to the sword in Germany with a 3-1 victory. Also French outfit Lyon scraped past Cypriots Apoel Nicosia by a goal to nil.

In other football news Carlos Tevez has apparently been welcomed back into the Manchester City fold after months out on ‘strike’. Will the energetic Argentine help city in the chase for domestic honours this season or are they simply putting him in the shop window for a potential summer exit. Only time will tell. City regains top spot

Manchester City scraped their way back to the top of the table Sunday after a gritty performance against struggling Aston Villa. It took odds on favourites City an hour to break down a resilient Villa defence in Birmingham. The victory puts the sky blues 2 points clear at the top of the Premiership with a third of season still to come.

In the other Premiership fixture in the Midlands, Wolverhampton Wanderers were thrashed by their neighbours West Bromwich Albion by 5 goals to 1. This humiliating defeat leaves Wolves in the relegation zone as West Brom are able to move up to 14th place.

In other football news Zambia defied the odds to beat best bet Ivory Coast on penalties in the African Nations Final in Equatorial Guinea . The tournament favourites Ivory Coast coasted out on penalties losing 8-7 to an emotional Zambian side.

Race for 4th heats up

After drawing their games last week both Manchester Utd and Liverpool FC were hoping to end Saturday with 3 points in the often fiery all North West encounter. After a goalless first half Liverpool were unable to fight back against Man Utd at Old Trafford, going down 2-1 after an early second half brace by Wayne Rooney. Despite a late goal by Suarez for Liverpool the Uruguayan again makes the headlines for the wrong reasons.

Manchester Utd therefore keep up the pressure on their Manchester neighbours going 2 points clear at the top of the table. City can regain top spot if they can take 3 points away at Aston Villa this afternoon. The Manchester side are clear favourites for the clash with Paddy Power offering the best odds of 8/11 whilst if anyone fancies an upset in favour of the Midlands side Bet365 will give you odds of 9/2. For those who believe the game will end in a deadlock BetVictor offers the best odds at 3/1.

Chelsea have had a torrid time of late and after failing to take advantage of a 3 goal lead last week against the Champions faltered further going down 2-0 at Everton. The third defeat against the Toffees at Goodison in as many seasons sees Chelsea slip out of the Champions League places after Arsenal narrowly defeat Sunderland with an Henry strike in the final minutes of the game. Tottenham are also able to stretch the gap further between themselves and fourth place after demolishing Newcastle at White Hart Lane.

Next week proves to be a massive weekend for both North West London clubs who face each other in what should be an intense derby at the Emirates. Betting for football is entering interesting months with the League cup final around the corner and the title race drawing to an exciting climax.

Interesting times lie ahead for England who will be in search of a new manager after the departure of Fabio Capello. With Harry Redknapp the fans favourite, giants William Hill are offering the best odds of 4/11 for the Tottenham manager to take over from the Italian. Spurs will be keen to keep hold of the man who has presided over arguably their best form for decades and anyone putting up the cash for this one may want to look further afield with Betfair offering best odds of 57/5 on Stuart Pierce taking over the reins or a whopping 20/1 offered by Stan James and Bet365 for Roy Hodgson. Another interesting Bet could be for the former Chelsea ‘Special one’ Jose Mourinho taking over in time for the Euro’s in the summer with Bet365 offering impressive 25/1 odds on the Portuguese managerial mastermind taking over the helm.

Utd defy odds in classic at The Bridge

Manchester Utd clawed their way back against Chelsea this afternoon in a Premier League stunner. Lacklustre defending from the reds saw them fall 3 goals behind after 50 minutes in West London but an energetic comeback sees them keep the pressure on their local rivals in the title race. Surely a nail biter for all those betting for football nuts who decided to place a bet on this one.

Newcastle Utd kept with the pace after beating Villa 2-1 at St James Park moving them into fifth place, 1 point behind Chelsea who occupy what looks like the final Champions League qualifying position up for grabs.

The weekends results so far put the onus on both Liverpool and Tottenham who face each other tomorrow in another explosive fixture. Tottenham have the opportunity to move further away from Chelsea and closer to Man Utd in their quest for Champions League football with a victory at Anfield whilst Liverpool will be eager to avenge their heavy defeat to Tottenham earlier in the season and edge nearer to their desired top 4 finish. Bookies make Liverpool the firm favourites for victory with Paddy Power offering odds of 23/20 whilst the best bet for Tottenham can be found at Betvictor offering a generous 11/4. If you think this encounter is set for a stalemate then online gaming giants Bet365 will give you the best bet of 12/5 for the draw.

Look out for our update after tomorrow’s game at betting for football where we help you make that betting decision slightly easier.

Top of the table Race

Top of the Table Race

After being humiliated in the Premiership last week by an impressive and lively Everton team Manchester City came back this week to convincingly put down an in form Fulham. Victory on the snow covered pitch in Manchester puts City 3 points ahead of local rivals and closest Premiership competitors Manchester Utd who face an erratic Chelsea this afternoon in London.

Chelsea’s chances of reaching the summit of the Prem this season are slim and they are still fighting to guarantee Champions League football next season. They therefore could really do with picking up 3 points against Premiership holders Manchester Utd. With Manchester Utd aiming to keep the pressure on City this proves to be a massive game for both teams and an enthralling encounter for neutral observers. As it stands the best odds for a Utd victory can be found at Coral at 19/10 whilst a slightly slimmer 7/4 can be found for a Chelsea at Stan James and Ladbrokes.

Keep updated for our reaction after the game, news on Liverpool vs Tottenham and best betting for football odds for the massive Monday fixture.

No transfer market suprises

Winter seems to have hit the transfer season pretty hard, with the premier league clubs not really splashing the cash! The most exciting news that we have had so far today is the rumour of Saha to sign for Spurs! however there was also talk of Defoe joining Liverpool.

Paddy Power are offering a football special on Jim Whites cliche lines said tonight on sky sports! offering 80/1 on “are football clubs the only ones to still use fax machines”. Just goes to show that no matter how bleak the transfer excitement is at the moment there is always betting for football!
